Values I Live By
One of the first things I do with new clients is a quick exercise on values. It is SO important to know what your main drivers are, as building a business that aligns with your values will set a strong foundation to make sure it is built sustainably, and that you ultimately love what you do the whole way through.
Fun
This isn’t just about going out and enjoying a glass of wine (although this IS fun), or those few moments you arrange in your calendar around other commitments where you can let yourself go and enjoy yourself. Fun runs through everything I do. I want to enjoy my time with my clients, and I want them to enjoy it too. After all….if you’re not having fun while you work then what’s the point?! Right?!
Fairness
This seems to be a running theme in my life. I need to make sure that every interaction and relationship I have feels fair. It’s also another reason why I love to specialise in businesses that give back and help people – if we’re going to make a lot of money out of what we do, I think it fair, right and actually incredibly inspiring to be able to use that money-making vehicle to give back to those who perhaps need help more than we do.
Freedom
Another word to describe this for me is ‘Experiences’. I love variety. I don’t want to be doing the same thing day in and day out. And I want to have the freedom to choose what it is that I do. I love to travel for this reason too. LIfe is all about the experiences we have and what we decide to do with them. It’s really inspiring for me to see the women in my circle doing this day in and day out.
About Laura
My background is in business management and consulting.
I started out my career with one of the largest consulting firms in London but despite doing well in the role, I didn’t find it fulfilling, or see how it was going to fit with the idea I had for my life.
I was stuck in a role where I couldn’t get the monetary increase I truly wanted, and I wasn’t really enjoying it either. I was working crazy hours where the only way to get noticed for promotion was to work even harder! There wasn’t any reward for working smarter.
I’ve always loved travel, new experiences, and had watched both my parents run their own businesses at different points in their lives, so I guess it was programmed into me that I wanted the freedom entrepreneurship provided me as well knowing that my earnings weren’t only dictated by the amount of time I was working, or by that next promotion I needed to get a raise! I wanted control!
Plus, I’d always wanted to make sure that when I had kids, I was going to be free enough and present to be an amazing mum to them. To thoroughly enjoy watching them grow without being dictated to as to when and how I worked.
So I left.
From there, I went into property development and management, starting my own business. I grew this for over a decade, getting it to a stage where it ultimately managed itself. But after a while it became very clear that I had made the ultimate mistake of just following the money and building a business I didn’t really love!
Ironically, property is one of my true passions. However, I never really questioned this any further. But there are so many facets to property and the area that had made the most business sense to me – the area that I ended up expanding into – just didn’t bring me any joy.
I realised that the only motivating factor for me really, was the fact that the business model was clear and easy to rinse and repeat, bringing in more money.
In fact, I hated it. With fiery passion by the end!
I’m seeing this happen more and more today.
With so many leaving “jobs and the corporate space” to start their own businesses, many are just chasing the money and doing what everyone else is doing – doing what they see others get success in because they think it’s a proven method.
Without consciously considering whether it’s something they truly want to do or have a passion for.
Or worse still, they are following their passions and making virtually no profits!
Failing and then giving up
YET there is a way to have both!
Realising my mistake, I started my own personal journey into what it was that I truly wanted to do. What my purpose and true passions really were. This led to me selling the Property business and now I am a trained coach with experience in business and mindset coaching for clients across the world and in varying industries.
And my god do I love what I do! I’ve been coaching for a number of years, but now I get to work with incredible women who want to start their own businesses and use them as a way to provide social or environmental benefit to the world, as well as give themselves and their families financial abundance, freedom and a sense of complete fulfilment.
This model breaks the mould of standard business practices and places business ethics, the element of giving back and societal benefit equal to profit.
My aim is to be inspiring and helping more than 1000 women to start and scale their own conscious businesses, create their ideal life of freedom and choice, and vicariously impact more than 1,000,000 lives within the next 10 years.
I truly believe that conscious, social and environmental businesses are the solution to resolving the issues around the world and locally that we face together, and leave for our next generation, whilst loving what you do at the same time. I firmly believe that we can create lives of freedom, abundance and passion for ourselves, whilst helping others simultaneously.
Laura lives in South East London with her husband, 2 gorgeous children and a rather large golden retriever called Stanley. Besides the above, she loves embracing her fitness and health, as well as spending time creating and enjoying new experiences for her family and friends.
